Abstract

Polymer latex esp. for coating paper and textiles is prepd. by (a) polymerising in aqs. emulsion a mixt. of (pts. wt.) (I) 30-60 conj. diolefin, (II) 30-70 arylvinyl monomer, (III) 1-10 of a mixt. of 40-90 wt.% unsatd. mono- or dicarboxylic acid, and 10-60 wt.% unsatd. primary amide, and (IV) 0.5-5, pref. 1-3 pts. wt. per 100 pts. wt. I, II and III, of a homopolymer of an unsatd. mono- or bicarboxylic acid, or a copolymer of >=15 wt.% of this acid and a vinyl monomer, (b) opt. neutralising the reaction pdt. with an alkaline soln., and (c) eliminating unreacted monomers by steam distilln. Good mechanical stability in the liquid state is obtd. Coatings are resistant to water, and can be printed clearly. Specif. polymsn. is effected in the presence of 0.5-5 pts. wt. org. emulsifier per 100 pts. wt. monomers, a chain transfer agent, a chelating agent for polyvalent ions, and opt. a base or a salt of a strong base and a weak acid. The catalyst consists of 0.1-3 pref. 0.25-2 pts. wt. K or ammonium persulphate per 100 pts. wt. monomers. Polymsn. is effected at 40-100 pref. 45-80 degrees C.
