Abstract

1468141 Preparation of self cross-linking polymers LONZA Ltd 7 March 1975 [8 March 1974] 9554/75 Heading C3P A mixture of : (a) 30-70 parts by weight of a monomer or monomer mixture whose polymer has a theoretical Tg of less than 10‹ C.; (b) 30-70 parts by weight of a monomer of monomer mixture whose polymer has a theoretical Tg of more than 30‹ C.; (c) 0À5-5 parts by weight of a polymerizable carboxylic acid or a salt thereof; (d) 2-35 parts by weight of a monoethylenically unsaturated reactive monomer which does not contain free carboxylic groups; and (e) 0À5-5 parts by weight of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a polymerizable sulphonic acid is polymerized at 15- 30‹ C. With a redox system comprising an alkali metal or ammonium persulphate, ascorbic acid and a ferrous salt at an initial pH of 3-4, at most 30% of the total monomers, together with the main amount of the persulphate being present initially, and the remainder of the ingredients being so closed in that a preselected constant temperature (Œ1‹ C.) results. In the examples, polymers are made from styrene, ethyl acrylate, methallyl sulphonate, N-methylolacrylamide, acrylamide, maleic acid monoureide and polypropylene glycol monoacrylate. The polymer can be methylolated in situ by suitable choice of polymerization medium.
