Abstract

1468142 Preparation of self cross-linking polymers LONZA Ltd 19 Sept 1975 38523/75 Addition to 1468141 Heading C3P A mixture of: (a) 30-70 parts by weight of a monomer or monomer mixture whose polymer has a theoretical Tg of less than 10‹ C.; (b) 30-70 parts by weight of a monomer or monomer mixture whose polymer has a theoretical Tg of more than 30‹ C.; (c) 0À5-5 parts by weight of a polymerizable carboxylic acid or a salt thereof; (d) 2-35 parts by weight of a di- or polyethylenically unsaturated monomer; and (e) 0À5-5 parts by weight of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a polymerizable sulphonic acid is polymerized at 15-30‹ C. with a redox system comprising an alkali metal or ammonium persulphate, ascorbic acid and a ferrous salt at an initial pH of 3-4, at most 30% of the total monomer, together with the main amount of the persulphate being present initially and the remainder of the ingredients being so closed in that a preselected constant temperature (Œ1À5‹ C.) results. In the examples polymers are prepared from styrene, ethyl acrylate, methallyl sulphonate, butyl acrylate, octyl acrylate, acrylic acid, N-methylol acrylamide and as multi-unsaturated monomers, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, neopentyl glycol dimethacrylate and butanediol dimethacrylate.
