Abstract

Stable aqueous dispersions of vinyl acetate polymers may be prepared by effecting polymerization of vinyl acetate in water in the presence of 0.3 to 5% by weight of the monomers of a protective colloid comprising a water-soluble copolymer of acrylamide and an N-alkyl acrylamide or N,N-di-alkyl acrylamide, said alkyl acrylamides having 2 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or groups. The vinyl acetate may be copolymerized, e.g. with crotonic acid, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or maleic or fumaric acids or the esters or half esters thereof. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of conventional catalysts and emulsifiers, e.g. ethylene oxide condensates, fatty alcohol sulphates and particularly reaction products of ethylene oxide-fatty alcohol adducts with phosphorus pentoxide. The dispersions may be thickened by adding small amounts or dissolved by adding large amounts of bases such as ammonia and amines. The dispersions may be used in paints and adhesive and may be added to concrete. Examples describe the polymerization of (2) vinyl acetate and the copolymerization of vinyl acetate with (3) crotonic acid and (4) dibutyl maleate and crotonic acid in the presence of copolymers of acrylamide and N-tertiary butyl acrylamide, the phosphated reaction product of ethylene oxide and coconut fatty alcohols, sodium lauryl sulphate, potassium persulphate, sodium sulphite and sodium bicarbonate, the monomer and potassium persulphate being added incrementally.
