Abstract

A film-forming, normally solid, copolymer having incorporated therein (a) 1-25% by weight of an N-alkoxymethyl acrylamide or methacrylamide having 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, (b) 35-85% by weight of at least one alkyl acrylate having 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, (c) 5-40% by weight of styrene, vinyl-toluene and/or a -methyl styrene, (d) 3-15% by weight of an a ,b -mono-ethylenically unsaturated mono-carboxylic acid, (e) 3-30% by weight of a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated ether or ester having at least one free hydroxyl group, (f) 0-10% by weight of acryl- or methacrylamide. The ammonium or amine salts of the copolymer are soluble in aqueous liquids and the solutions are useful as stoving lacquers. A thermosetting, water-soluble melamine or urea-formaldehyde resin may also be included in the solution. The aqueous solutions of the ammonium or amine salts of the copolymer may be prepared by copolymerizing the comonomers in the proportions specified, in an anhydrous organic solvent which is in contact with a free radical forming catalyst to produce a solution of the copolymer, removing the solvent at least partially after or while adding water and a less than equivalent quantity, as calculated on the carboxyl groups of the copolymer, of ammonia or an amine with a boiling-point below 170 DEG C., the solutions having a pH value of from 6.6 to 7.4. In the examples, monomers used are: (a) N-methoxy methyl acrylamide, (b) butyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, (c) styrene, (d) acrylic acid, (e) 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, and trimethylolpropane-diallyl ether, and (f) acrylamide. The solvent used is n-butanol and tert. dodecylmercaptan is employed as a chain terminator. The catalyst used is cumene hydroperoxide and the salts are formed using ammonia or dimethylethanolamine. In a comparative example, N-methylol acrylamide is used instead of the N-methoxymethyl acrylamide. The viscosities of the polymer solutions may be increased by the addition of ammonia or amines or glycol ether alcohols. The solutions are pigmented with titanium dioxide, butyl glycol is added to avoid bubble formation and the lacquers sprayed on to various substrates and stoved. A water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde resin is incorporated in Example 7.
