Abstract
Aqueous dispersions of vinyl ester polymers are made by polymerizing the vinyl ester, with or without comonomers, in aqueous dispersion, using as stabilizer a mixture of an anionic surface-active agent with a polypropylene oxidepolyethylene oxide block copolymer of molecular weight 3,700 to 12,500 and containing 26 to 43 mols. propylene oxide and 51 to 228 mols. ethylene oxide, the molar ratio of propylene oxide to ethylene oxide being within the limits 1:1,7 to 1:5,3 respectively. The vinyl ester may be vinyl acetate and/or vinyl propionate, and up to 50% of a comonomer such as methyl or ethyl acrylate may be used. Preferred anionic agents are salts of sulphated esters of oleic acid, e.g. sulphated methyl oleate, or dioctyl sodium sulpho-succinate, and other stabilizers may also be present, e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol. The polymerization catalyst may be potassium persulphate and the vinyl ester may be added dropwise during the polymerization. The polymer dispersions may be mixed with plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate, and with pigments, fillers and thickening agents, and may be used as paints.
