Abstract

Vinyl monomers are polymerized in aqueous suspension in the presence of a polymerization catalyst and a dispersing agent consisting of a graft polymer containing hydrophilic groups, e.g. -OH, -COOH, or -CONH2, and obtained by copolymerizing an ethylenically-unsaturated monomer in the presence of a preformed polymer. Specified vinyl monomers are vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, and styrene. The graft copolymer may be a polymer of styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl or vinylidene chloride with polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, polyacrylic acid, or a vinyl acetate polymer. Exemplified graft polymers are vinyl chloride-polyvinyl alcohol, styrene-polyvinyl alcohol, styrene-polyacrylic acid, and styrene-polyacrylamide. The catalyst may be benzoyl peroxide or alphaalpha1-azobisisobutyronitrile.
