Abstract

1365998 Polymerization of vinyl bromide ETHYL CORP 26 May 1972 [27 May 1971] 25055/72 Heading C3P Polyvinyl bromide is prepared by polymerization of vinyl bromide in aqueous emulsion containing water and vinyl bromide in a ratio of 0À5 : 1 to 5 : 1 using a water-soluble peroxidic compound and a water soluble reducing agent which are brought into contact with each other at a controlled rate such the rate of free radical generation is equal to that obtained by adding from 2À8 x 10<SP>-4</SP> to 8À7 x 10<SP>-4</SP> weight unit equivalents of sodium sulphite per 100 weight units of vinyl bromide to an emulsion containing 1À5 Î 10<SP>-3</SP> to 4À6 Î 10<SP>-3</SP> weight unit equivalents of ammonium persulphate per 100 weight units of vinyl bromide at 50‹ C. in the presence of 7 ppm. monomer of cupric sulphate. The polymerization is carried out either by adding an aqueous solution of the reducing agent to a vinyl bromide emulsion containing the peroxidic compound or vice versa. In examples ammonium persulphate and sodium sulphite were used as the peroxidic compound and reducing agent respectively in the presence of copper sulphate. The polymerization medium also included sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate as emulsifying agent, sodium dihydrogen phosphate and disodium hydrogen phosphate buffers and a silicone anti-foaming agent. The polymers produced by this process are thermally stable.
