Abstract

Acrylic acid esters of alcohols having a chain length of 2-8 carbon atoms such as ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, ethylene glycol monoethylether acrylate or octyl acrylate are copolymerized with a monomer selected from vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, styrene and methyl methacrylate. More than two monomers may be used, e.g. vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate. In example 1 an ethyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate copolymer is prepared by introducing ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, benzoyl peroxide and tertiary dodecyl mercaptan into a solution of sodium polyacrylate in water and heating the mixture. During the heating process sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate is added. In example 2 a copolymer of n-butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate is prepared by heating a mixture of n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, water, sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium persulphate and dodecyl mercaptan and coagulating with a barium chloride solution.
