Abstract

A latex comprises an interpolymer of a styrene monomer, a C5 to C20 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and a cross-linking agent having 2 or 3 unsaturated groups. Optionally the interpolymer comprises a stabilizing monomer selected from acrylic or methacrylic acid and monoalkyl esters of dicarboxylic acids. The styrene monomer may be styrene, vinyl toluene or a -methyl styrene, and the crosslinking agent may be any one of many specified esters of unsaturated alcohols and/or unsaturated acids, unsaturated ketones or ethers, butadiene, or preferably may be a divinyl benzene or naphthalene. The latex may be prepared by initially polymerizing the styrene monomer in a first emulsifier mixture and then slowly adding the other monomers and a second emulsifier mixture. In Example I the following polymerization ingredients are used; water, sulphuric acid, ferrous ammonium sulphate, ammonia, emulsifiers, potassium pyrosphosphate and potassium persulphate. The products find application as coating compositions, e.g. for metal priming. Pigments and/or fillers, such as titanium dioxide, aluminium silicate and mica, may be included.
