Abstract

A process is described for bead polymerizing methyl methacrylate using a peroxide catalyst and a mercaptan mixture as modifier. The peroxide catalyst used is preferably an aliphatic peroxide such as caproyl or lauryl peroxide. The modifier is a mixture of (a) one or more primary mercaptans containing 1-6 carbon atoms such as butyl mercaptan and (b) one or more mercaptans containing 7-9 carbon atoms such as n-octyl or 2-ethyl-hexy 1 mercaptan, said mixture containing not less than 25% of (b). The process can be used for copolymerizing methyl methacrylate with one or more copolymerizable monomers such as methyl or butyl acrylate and butyl methacrylate. Polymerization can be carried out in suspension using sodium polyacrylate or in bulk at temperatures below 100 DEG C.
