Abstract

The invention comprises polymers and vulcanized polymers containing recurring units of the formula <FORM:0904261/IV(a)/1> where Rf is a perfluoroalkyl radical having 3-12 carbon atoms, R is hydrogen or methyl and m is 3-12. They are prepared by polymerization of the acrylic or methacrylic esters Rf (CH2)m OCOCR=CH2 (see Group IV(b)) by bulk, solution or emulsion polymerization using benzoyl peroxide or other free radical polymerization initiators. Homopolymers and copolymers with for example vinyl chloride, vinyl stearate, styrene and butadiene are referred to. The polymers are used for rendering fibrous materials hydrophobic and oleophobic (see Group VIII). Specification 904,263 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula Rf(CH2)mOCOCR=CH2, where Rf is a perfluoroalkyl radical having 3-12 carbon atoms, R is hydrogen or methyl, and m is 3-12. These are prepared by esterification of acrylic or methacrylic acid or reaction of the acid chloride with an appropriate perfluoroalkyl alkanol (see Specification 904,263) and are polymerizable (see Group IV(a)).
