Abstract

In a continuous process for the copolymerization of ethylene and a vinyl ester in the presence of a solvent and a free-radical catalyst and in the absence of emulsifiers, the ratio of monomeric vinyl ester to ethylene is kept within 1:20 to 1:15 and the ratio of vinyl ester to solvent within 1:05, to 1:15 by continuously replenishing the monomers. Vinyl acetate or propionate may be used and the catalysts specified are alkyl percarbonates, lauroyl peroxide and azo- -diisobutyric acid nitrile. Solvents disclosed are hydrocarbons, ethers, esters and alcohols, e.g. t-butanol with/without water. Transparent foils may be obtained. Specifications 807,112 and 843,974 are referred to.
