Abstract

1484675 Peroxydicarbonate initiators SOLVAY & CIE SA 4 Dec 1974 [5 Dec 1973] 52428/74 Heading C3P Peroxydicarbonates are formed immediately prior to use as a polymerization initiator by reaction of a haloformate ester with an inorganic peroxide in the presence of a base which is optional except when hydrogen peroxide is used, 100-0À20 parts of a water-immiscible solvent and 10-1000 parts of water per part by weight of haloformate and an amount of the whole reaction mixture is introduced into the polymerization reactor to provide 0À01-3 parts of peroxydicarbonate per 100 parts by weight of monomer. The solvent is preferably volatile, i.e. boiling below 100‹ C. and in the examples is methylene chloride, dibutyl phthalate or 1,1,2 - trichloro - 1,2,2 - trifluoroethane.
