Abstract

In the mass polymerization of vinyl aromatic or alkyl monomers by heating in a final stage at between 150 DEG and 250 DEG C., a diphenyl ethane of general formula:- <FORM:0864675/IV (a)/1> in which R1 to R4 represent hydrogen, or an alkyl group at least two of R1 to R4 being alkyl groups, and in which the benzene radicals A and B are unsubstituted or substituted with alkyl or alkoxy groups, is used as a catalyst. Polymers of styrene and styrene derivatives and copolymers thereof with maleic anhydride, acenaphthylene and acrylonitrile, and allyl esters, e.g. diallyl phthalate, alone or with vinyl chloride are specified. (a a :b b -tetramethyl)-,(a -methyl-a -ethyl: b -methyl-b -ethyl)- and a a :b b -tetraethyl diphenyl ethanes, and (a :b -diisopropyl)-a -b -diphenyl ethane are given as examples of the catalyst. In the initial stages catalysts such as benzoyl or t-butyl peroxides may be present and the process may be batch or continuous in a tower. Natural or synthetic rubber e.g. butadiene-styrene rubber, plasticizers, and solvents may also be present.
