Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent a polymer from adhering to the inner wall of a polymerizer, by polymerizing a vinyl monomer in the presence of a mercaptan of a specified boiling point in the vapor-phase zone of a reaction.
CONSTITUTION: An inert gas containing 1W1,000ppm, preferably 10W500ppm of a mercaptan of b.p.≤100°C, preferably ≤40°C under normal pressure, such as methylmercaptan or ethylmercaptan, is introduced into the vapor-phase zone of a polymerizer, which contains a vinyl monomer such as an alkyl (meth)acrylate or styrene, and the monomer is polymerized at a pressure of 0W50kg/cm2G and at a temperature of 50W250°C. Thus it is possible to prevent a polymer scale from adhering to the vapour-phase zone wall of the polymerizer and to prepare in good yield a product, excellent in physical properties, at a high productivity rate.
