Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high quality polymer of methyl methacrylate containing only small amount of by-produced oligomer, in high productivity, by the bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate monomer in a homogeneously agitating reactor at a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl methacrylate polymer is prepared by the bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate monomer or a monomer mixture comprising ≥ 80% of methyl methacrylate and ≤ 20wt% of other copolymerizable vinyl monomer in a homogeneously agitating reactor wherein there is no gaseous phase in the reaction zone, and the ratio of the gaseous phase to the total volume of the reaction zone is maintained less than 30%, pref. less than 20%. The polymerization temperature is between 160°C and 200°C, pref. 165°C and 195°C. When the temperature at the initial stage of the polymerization is lower than 160°C, the viscosity of the polymerization system increases and the ultimate polymer content is suppressed, and the temperature exceeding 200°C, causes undesirable effects such as lowering of heat stability and discoloration of the resultant polymer.
