Abstract
PURPOSE: To stably conduct continuous polymerization of vinyl chloride for a long time, by connecting a plurality of multistage continuous tray polymerizer in series, continuing the polymerization in the first polymerizer until the polymerization system passes its unstable region, and then gradually heightening the conversion in the subsequent polymerizers.
CONSTITUTION: Vinyl chloride is polymerized in suspension by feeding a polymerization material to which a scale-preventing agent has been added, into the first stage of a plurality of the polymerizers of the above type, and then passing the reaction mixture through the subsequent polymerizers each of which has substantially no vapor phase. In the above process, the polymerization in the first stage is conducted under forced agitation (power consumption of the agitator, of about 1.5W3 KW per m3 of content is preferred and those of about 0.5W1Kw/m3 content can be used for the second or later polymerizers) until the system passes the unstable region of the polymer dispersion, i.e., a region in which the polymer is low in polymerization degree and scales are apt to deposit. Then, the polymerization is continued in the second or later polymerizers until the final conversion of about 80W95% is obtained.
