Abstract

PURPOSE: Titled emulsion having a specified flow ratio and being excellent in film- forming properties, wettability and penetrability in materials for inorganic moldings, comprising water and fine particles of a polymer containing specified monomer units, dispersed in the water.
CONSTITUTION: The aqueous emulsion for modifying inorganic moldings, in which a polymer consisting of components (A) and (B) hereunder described is dispersed as particles smaller than 1μ, and which has a flow ratio of at least 1.2 and is free from a low-MW emulsifier, is produced by consecutively introducing, in portions, (A) 0.2W10wt% of an ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid (salt) such as vinylsulfonic acid (Na salt) or p-styrenesulfonic acid, (B) a different ethylenically unsaturated compound such as vinyl chloride or (methy)acrylate ester and a polymerization catalyst into a polymerization reactor, and, at the same time, emulsion- polymerizing the reaction mixture.
EFFECT: It is possible to give to inorganic moldings, improved strength, surface hardness, water resistance, resistance to exudation of alkali and chemical resistance.
