Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain titled film-forming dispersion good adhesion to plastics, paper, etc., by preparing a dispersion of polymer particles obtained by forming crusts consisting of a polymer of a monomer mixture of specified composition over vinylidene chloride polymer cores.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous dispersion of multilayer polymer particles is prepared by a multistage polymerization process comprising emulsion-polymerizing the following monomer A and, after addition of the following monomer B, emulsion-polymerizing the mixture: (A) 100pts.wt. monomer mixture containing 85W95% vinylidene chloride, 0.1W15% copolymerizable vinyl monomer [except unsaturated organic acids (salts) and (meth)acrylamide] and 0.1W25% monomer selected from the group consisting of unsaturated organic acids (salts) and (meth)acrylamide, and (B) 2W50pts.wt. monomer mixture containing 20W65% monomer selected from the group consisting of methyl methacrylate t-butyl acrylate and vinyl aromatic compounds, 35W80% monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylate esters except the above, methacrylate esters except the above, vinyl esters and vinyl ethers and 0.1W10% monomer selected from unsaturated organic acids and (meth)acrylamide.
