Abstract

A soluble and fusible resin capable of being converted into an insoluble and infusible resin which does not support combustion comprises a copolymer containing 80 to 90 per cent of vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride and 1 to 20 per cent of an allyl ester of acrylic, methacrylic or a -chloroacrylic acid. The resin may be prepared by subjecting to polymerization conditions a mixture of vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride with an allyl ester of acrylic, methacrylic, or a -chloroacrylic acid dissolved in appropriate proportions in a solvent, such as acetone, dioxane or carbon tetrachloride, which dissolves both the monomeric materials and the soluble and fusible resin obtained therefrom, and terminating the polymerization before gelation sets in, preferably by the addition of a non-solvent for the polymer, such as methanol. The allyl ester is preferably introduced into the polymerization vessel as the polymerization proceeds, the rate of addition being so regulated that the ratio of the proportions of monomers is maintained constant. 2-azodi-isobutyronitrile may be used as catalyst. The resin may be converted to the insoluble, infusible state by prolonged heating, or by heating in the presence of a polymerization catalyst such as tertiary butyl perbenzoate or benzoyl peroxide and/or another mono- or poly-functional monomer such as diallyl phthalate. Solutions of the soluble fusible polymers in acetone, carbon tetrachloride or dioxane may be used for impregnating fabrics or as lacquers.
