Abstract

A stable aqueous latex of a copolymer of ethylene and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid containing not more than 12 carbon atoms or a salt thereof is made by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of water containing an ethylenically unsaturated acid or a salt thereof in the presence of an ethylene polymerization initiator. Preferably the initiator is an alkali metal persulphate and polymerization is carried out at a temperature of 60 to 150 DEG C. and a pressure of 2,000 to 20,000 p.s.i. Exemplified acids are acrylic, methacrylic, and maleic acids.
