Abstract
Polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride are prepared by heating a single-phase solution containing: (a) the monomer or monomers; (b) a "water-soluble acid"; (c) water; and (d) a water-miscible aliphatic alcohol, the relative proportions of (a), (b) and (c) being such that they would form a two-phase liquid system at the temperature of polymerization, in the absence of (d). A "water-soluble acid" is defined as a saturated, aliphatic carboxylic acid containing not more than three carbon atoms in the molecule apart from those in the carboxylic group or groups, and the following inorganic acids, e.g. phosphoric, phosphorous, sulphuric, sulphurous, chlorosulphonic and hydrochloric acids. Acetic, propionic, citric and oxalic acids or mixtures are specified. Examples of alcohols are ethyl, methyl and isopropyl alcohols. Peroxidic catalysts such as crotonyl peroxide and ammonium persulphate may be used. In examples, the following single-phase solutions are polymerized: (1) vinyl chloride, methyl alcohol, phosphoric acid, water, crotonyl peroxide; (2) vinyl chloride, ethyl alcohol, acetic acid, water, ammonium persulphate; (3) vinyl chloride, isopropyl alcohol, citric acid, water, ammonium persulphate; (4) as (3), using oxalic instead of citric acid; and (5) vinyl chloride, methyl alcohol, phosphoric acid, water, ammonium persulphate.
