Abstract

Polymers of N-vinylpyrrolidinone (which may be substituted in the ring by one or more alkyl groups) and which increase the viscosity of water when dissolved or dispersed therein, are upgraded (i.e. molecular weight increased) by treatment in water with acetyl peroxide or t-butyl-hydroperoxide so as to result in a polymer having a K value greater than the starting polymer. The temperature of treatment may be 50-90 DEG C. The polymer may contain not more than 0.5% of residual monomer and the treatment can result in the polymerization of the residual monomer and thereafter the K value of the polymer is increased. 0.1-1% of peroxide may be used and the aqueous solution may contain 0.1-1% ammonia. The product may be in the form of a gel. The initial K value of the polymer may be 30-70. The polymer may be a homopolymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone or may be a copolymer containing at least 50% of the N-vinylpyrrolidinone and methyl acrylate, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, methyl or ethyl methacrylate or vinyl acetate.
