Abstract

1339074 Emulsion copolymerization CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 25826/71 Heading C3P Emulsion co-polymerization of at least one plasticizing component and at least one component which imparts hardness is effected in the presence, as sole emulsifier, of 0À3-4À0 wt. per cent (relative to monomer mixture) of a mono- or di-salt of an α-sulpho-C 10-20 fatty acid, or a salt of an ester of such an acid with a C 1-3 alcohol. The monomer mixtures suitably comprise (i) styrene or a derivative thereof, or a mixture of a styrene with up to 40% of acrylonitrile, and (ii) a conjugated diene or a C 4-8 alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid. Up to 5% of other monomers may also be present, particularly acrylic acid and/or acrylamide. In examples the following copolymers are made: styrene / butadiene / acrylic acid, styrene / butadiene, styrene / 2 - ethylhexyl acrylate / acrylic acid, styrene / acrylonitrile / butadiene acrylic acid, and styrene/butadiene/acrylamide/ acrylic acid. The activators used in these examples are ammonium peroxydisulphate, ammonium persulphate, cumene hydroperoxide/ "Rongalite" (Registered Trade Mark), and ammonium persulphate/sodium metabisulphite. In Examples 8 and 9, using the last mentioned activator, further additions thereof are made during the process. Examples I-10 also use tert-dodecylmercaptan as regulator.
