Abstract

1285683 Emulsion polymerization BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 8 Jan 1970 [9 Jan 1969] 954/70 Heading C3P The emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers is effected using as emulsifier a #-hydroxyalkyl sulphonium salt or oxidized #-hydroxyalkyl sulphonium salt containing 8-25 carbon atoms. Other emulsifiers may also be present. In the examples there are polymerized (1) vinylidene chloride, ethyl acrylate and N - vinyl - N - methylimidazolium methosulphate with hydrogen peroxide using lauryl-di-#-hydroxyethyl sulphonium sulphate and dodecyl alcohol/ethylene oxide adduct; (2) n-butyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, dimethylaminoethyl acrylate and styrene with hydrogen peroxide and ferrous sulphate using a mixture of n-(C 11 -C 15 ) alkyl di-#-hydroxyethyl sulphonium sulphates; (3) as (1) except for butyl instead of ethyl acrylate with hydrogen peroxide and cobalt sulphate using decyl-di-#-hydroxypropyl sulphonium sulphate and polyvinylpyrrolidone; (4) styrene, acrylonitrile and acrylamide with hydrogen peroxide using a mixture of n-(C 11 -C 15 ) alkyl-di-#-hydroxypropyl sulphonium sulphates and sperm oil alcohol/ethylene oxide adduct; (5) vinyl chloride and N-vinyl-N<SP>1</SP>-methyl-imidazolium methosulphate with hydrogen peroxide using lauryl- # - hydroxyethyl - # - hydroxypropyl sulphonium sulphate and sperm oil alcohol/ethylene oxide adduct; (6) styrene and butadiene with hydrogen peroxide and cobalt sulphate using n - decyl - di - # - hydroxyethyl sulphonium chloride and (7) methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, methacrylamide and N-vinyl-N<SP>1</SP>-methylimidazolium methosulphate with hydrogen peroxide using n - decyl - di - # - hydroxyethyl sulphonium acetate.
