Abstract

Coating compositions comprise aqueous emulsions of polymers comprising (A) 1 to 24% by weight of conjugated dienes, (B) 2 to 20% by weight of acrylamide and/or a -substituted acrylamides, (C) 97-56% by weight of at least one additional olefinically unsaturated compound and in which the proportion of "elasticizing" monomers is between 15 and 60%. (A) may be butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene, chloroprene, 2,3-dichloro-1,3,-butadiene or 2-cyano-1,3,-butadiene. (B) may be acrylamide, methacrylamide, a -dodecyl-, a -chloro-, a -cyano- and a -carboxy-acrylamide. Monomer (C) may be acrylonitrile or substitution products, styrene or substitution products, esters of acrylic or methacrylic acids, N-alkyl-and N,N-dialkyl amides of acrylic and a -alkyl-acrylic acids, esters of maleic and fumaric acid with alcohols and halfesters with ether alcohols, vinyl esters, vinylidene chloride, vinyl pyridine or aliphatic unsaturated hydrocarbons. The "elasticizing" monomer is defined as comprising conjugated dienes, esters of acrylic acid with saturated aliphatic alcohols containing 2 to 18 carbon atoms or ether alcohols of dihydric alcohols or esters of methacrylic acid with an aliphatic alcohol containing 4 to 18 carbon atoms. Polymerization may take place in aqueous emulsion by free radical methods. The curing agents used may be peroxides, applied in aqueous emulsion. Examples specify (I) a copolymer of styrene, methacrylamide and butylacrylate with styrene, butyl acrylate and butadiene grafted on; (II) butyl acrylate, styrene, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, isoprene; (III) methacrylamide, ethyl acrylate, styrene, butadiene; (IV) butadiene, butyl acrylate, styrene, acrylamide; (V) methacrylamide, vinylidene chloride, butyl methacrylate, butadiene; (VI) butadiene, styrene, g -methoxy-butyl acrylate, acrylamide; (VII) butadiene, acrylonitrile, butyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, acrylamide, monododecyl maleate; (VIII) butadiene, acrylonitrile, styrene, butyl acrylate, methacrylamide; (IX) butadiene, butyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene, acrylic acid, methacrylamide. The resulting emulsions may be mixed with ammonium polyacrylate or a butadiene latex stabilizer such as 2,6-ditert. butyl cresol and are used to impregnate paper and textiles and coat metals.
