Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of polymerized ethylenic monomers are obtained by adding the monomer to an aqueous medium containing a persulphate salt at a rate which is approximately equal to its rate of polymerization, the amount of persulphate at the start of polymerization being not less than 0,2% of the total monomer employed and the aqueous medium being free from water-soluble emulsifiers. Monomers specified are acrylic and methacrylic esters, styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl and vinylidene halides, butadiene and isoprene. Also present during the polymerization may be a polysiloxane liquid, e.g. phenyl polysiloxane and hexamethyl disiloxane, which permit more rapid addition of monomer. The examples describe the application of the above process to: (1) ethyl acrylate; (2) a mixture of methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile; (3) a mixture of methyl and ethyl acrylates; (4) a mixture of methyl acrylate and methacrylate; and (5) beta-ethoxyethyl methacrylate.
