Abstract
Water-soluble polymers comprise copolymers of (I) a mixed ester of formula <FORM:1004055/C3/1> or <FORM:1004055/C3/2> wherein n is zero or an integer within the range of 1 to 50, R represents a straight-chained or branched alkyl radical with 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a cyclohexyl radical, a phenylalkyl radical, the alkyl group of which contains 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical or an alkylphenyl radical, the alkyl group of which contains 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R1 and R11 each represent a hydrogen atom or a methyl radical, whereby R1 and R11 may be the same or different, and R111 represents an alkyl radical with 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical or a hydrogen atom, with (II) at least one ethylenically unsaturated water-soluble polymerizable compound. Component (II) may be acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, sulphonated styrene and vinyl pyrrolidone. Other monomers such as vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile may be present. Polymerization may take place by solution in water, by precipitation in low molecular weight alcohols, or by the bead emulsion polymerization of a continuous phase comprising an aqueous solution of the monomers and the disperse phase of an hydrophobic organic solvent with a small amount of an emulsifier. Since the mixed ester (I) serves as an emulsifier, additional emulsifier need not be present. Exemplified catalysts are potassium persulphate/sodium metabisulphite, azobisisobutyronitrile, potassium persulphate and hydrogen peroxide. Specifications 963,902 and 996,486 are referred to.
