Abstract

A linear copolymer has in its main chain (a) units derived from polymerizable ethylenicallyunsaturated monomers and (b) at least one unit of the general formula <FORM:1041088/C3/1> in which R1 is a tertiary alkyl or aralkyl radical, R2 is a methyl radical or a hydrogen atom and R3 is a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl radical or a <FORM:1041088/C3/2> or <FORM:1041088/C3/3> group wherein R4 stands for an alkyl or aralkyl radical. In the examples, the copolymer is produced by copolymerization in aqueous emulsion of methyl methacrylate with t-butylpermethacrylate or t-butylpermonobutylfumarate, of vinyl acetate with mono-t-butylpermaleate, and of vinyl chloride with t-butylpermethacrylate, and by tercopolymerization of methyl methacrylate, styrene and t-butylpermonobutylmaleate. Other a ,b -unsaturated peresters and comonomers are also specified. Emulsifying agents used are partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate alone or together with lauryl alcohol and glyceryl monostearate. Catalysts used are diisopropylperoxydicarbonate and acetylcyclohexyl-sulphonylperoxide. Graft polymers are prepared from the above copolymers by graft polymerization with styrene or butyl acrylate in aqueous emulsion, or with acrylonitrile in dimethylformamide solution.
