Abstract

1,167,524. Copolymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 Oct., 1967 [26 Oct., 1966], No. 48106/66. Heading C3P. A water- or alkali-soluble or swellable copolymer is prepared by co-polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or a mixture of two or more such monomers, which monomer or mixture is polymerizable to a polymer soluble or swellable in water or aqueous alkali, with an ethylenically unsaturated surface-active agent of general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a monovalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aryl aliphatic, aryl, alkylaryl or acyl radical containing more than 4 carbon atoms; R<SP>2</SP> is an alkylene radical containing not more than 5 carbon atoms, at least 10% by weight of the units -R<SP>2</SP>O- having a structure -CH 2 CH 2 O-; R<SP>3</SP> is an aliphatic organic radical containing in its structure wherein R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are hydrogen, alkyl radicals or halogen atoms and may be the same or different, and n is an integer from 3 to 100. In the examples, the following monomers are copolymerized using as free radical catalysts either azobisisobutyronitrile, lauroyl peroxide or potassium persulphate:- (i) maleic anhydride, methyl vinyl ether and one of polyethylene glycol mono-allyl monononylphenyl ether, polyethylene glycol monoallyl mono-cetyl ether, polyethylene glycol mono-methaorylate mono-nonyl phenyl ether, polyethylene glycol nonylphenyl mono-vinyl ether, and polyethylene/polypropylene glycol mono-allyl mono-iso-octyl ether; (ii) maleic anhydride, vinyl acetate and polyethylene glycol mono-allyl mono-cetyl ether; (iii) maleic anhydride and polyethylene glycol mono-allyl mono-nonyl phenyl ether; (iv) maleic anhydride, styrene and polyethylene glycol mono-methacrylate mono-nonyl phenyl ether; (v) acrylic acid and polyethylene glycol mono-allyl mono-nonyl phenyl ether; (vi) acrylamide and polyethylene monomethacrylate mono-nonyl phenyl ether. These copolymers may be converted to aliphatic partial esters by reaction with a lower aliphatic alcohol or may be converted to solid salts by reaction with an alkali metal hydroxide. The copolymers are, in the examples, used to thicken (1) nonionic and anionic surface-active agents and (2) natural and synthetic rubber latexes.
