Abstract

A monomeric material containing at least 25% by weight of an alpha-beta unsaturated mono olefinic monocarboxylic acid, is polymerised in an organic medium in which the monomeric material is soluble and the resultant polymer is insoluble comprising (1) an aromatic hydrocarbon and (2) at least one defined polar additive, the proportion of (2) in the medium being sufficient to deswell the polymer produced therein by at least 5% as compared to its condition when the solvent used is the pure aromatic hydrocarbon. Aromatic hydrocarbons specified are benzene, toluene and xylene. Polar additives specified are carboxylic acids, e.g. acetic acid, alcohols, e.g. methanol and ethanol, acetone, dioxane, tetrahydrofurane and acetonitrile. Unsaturated acids specified are acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, chloroacrylic, cyanoacrylic and phenylacrylic acids. The unsaturated acids may be copolymerised with polyunsaturated monomers to produce copolymers which are insoluble but highly swellable in water, specified polyunsaturated monomers being divinyl benzene, ethylene glycol diacrylate and dimethacrylate, diallyl acrylamide, divinyl ketone, 1,8-nonadiene, low polymers of butadiene and isoprene, hexaallyl brimethylene trisulphone, triallyl cyanurate, 3,9-divinylspirobi-2,4,8,10-tetroxaspiro-(5,5)-hendecane, tetravinyl and tetraallyl silanes, divinyl ether and the polyalkenyl polyethers described in Specification 731,226. There may also be used as comonomers compounds such as styrene and its chloro, ethoxy and methyl derivatives, methyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, N-methyl acrylamide, methyl vinyl ketone, ethylene, propylene, n-butene, isobutylene, dimethyl maleate, methyl and ethyl vinyl ethers, vinyl acetate and benzoate, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, vinyl carbazole and vinyl pyrrolidone. Polymerisation may be carried out with the aid of a catalyst such as benzoyl or caprylyl peroxide. The reaction mixture may be seeded with a small amount of reaction mixture from a previous run.
