Abstract
1339511 Ethylene terpolymers LEUNAWERKE "WALTER ULBRICHT" VEB 23 March 1971 7619/71 Heading C3P Terpolymers are prepared by polymerizing (1) ethylene, (2) 10 to 85 weight per cent of vinyl acetate and (3) a vinyl-allyl compound, an ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid and an unsaturated alcohol, an alkylene group substituted amide of an unsaturated acid, a multiple unsaturated derivative of an inorganic acid or a multiple unsaturated silicon organic compound, at a pressure above 20 atmospheres and a temperature above 10‹ C. in the presence of a free radical initiator. Polymerization may be effected in a non-aqueous solvent or diluent, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, cyclohexanol, methanol, t.butanol, carbon tetrachloride or hexane. The initiator may be a peroxide, azo compound or redox system. The products may be crosslinked by heating or subjected to conventional sulphur vulcanization. Examples describe the copolymerization of ethylene and vinyl acetate with (1) allyl acrylate with azobisisobutyronitrile in benzene, (2) allyl acrylate with azobisisobutyronitrile in cyclohexane, (3) N-allyl acrylamide with benzoyl peroxide in benzene, (4) divinyl methyl phosphate with lauroyl peroxide in toluene, and (5) allyl acrylate with azobisisobutyronitrile. Copolymers (1) and (2) are compounded with zinc oxide carbon black and vulcanized, and copolymer (1) is crosslinked by heating.
