Abstract
An interpolymer is prepared from a mixture of (1) at least 10% by weight of a monomeric, polymerizable alpha-beta olefinically unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, with optionally up to 90% by weight of a different olefinically unsaturated monomer, and (2) from 0.0005 to 6% by weight of the other monomers of a poly-alkenyl compound of formula (Y)4-n-M-(R)n where R is an alkenyl group of 2 to 4 carbon atoms with terminal unsaturation and Y is an hydrocarbon group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms having no olefinic unsaturation, n is 2, 3 or 4, and M is silicon, germanium, tin or lead. The carboxylic acid monomer may be an acrylic or maleic acid or anhydride, which may be substituted, or an homologue thereof. The optional monomer may be styrene, a halo or alkoxy styrene, acrylamide, methacrylamide or an alkylacrylamide, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, a vinyl halide, a vinylidene cyanide or halide, vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, benzoate, pyridine, carbazole, pyrrolidone, piperidine or pyrimidine, isopropenyl acetate, propionate, butyrate or benzoate, an alkyl vinyl ketone, an alkyl isopropenyl ketone, an alkyl vinyl ether, ethylene, isobutylene, or a dialkyl maleate or fumarate. The monomers are polymerized in an organic solvent at 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, azobisisobutyronitrile, sodium persulphate, capryl peroxide, pelargonyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide, tertiary butyl diperphthalate, tertiary butyl perbenzoate, sodium peracetate or sodium percarbonate. The interpolymer swells in water to form a mucilage. The interpolymer may be converted to an alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt. In examples, interpolymers are formed from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, methyl vinyl ether, isobutylene, styrene, acrylonitrile, tetraallyl silane, tetravinyl silane, triallyl methyl silane, diallyl dimethyl silane, tetramethallyl silane, dimethallyl dimethyl silane, divinyl dimethyl silane, trivinyl methyl silane, diallyl divinyl silane, tetraallyl germane, tetravinyl germane, tetraallyl tin, tetravinyl tin and tetrallyl lead.
