Abstract
Vinyl chloride polymers are prepared by polymerizing under the influence of a monomer-soluble catalyst, vinyl chloride or a mixture of copolymerizable compounds containing at least 50 per cent by weight of vinyl chloride emulsified in water in the presence of at least two emulsifying agents, only one of which is water-soluble, the other or others being monomer-soluble. The water-soluble emulsifying agent may be sodium cetyl, lauryl or oleyl sulphate, sodium or ammonium salts of sulphonated or sulphated methyl oleate, the sodium salt of sulphonated castor oil, or sodium or ammonium oleate, palmitate or stearate. Monomer-soluble emulsifying agents which may be used include octadecyl and cetyl alcohols, glyceryl stearate and hexadecylamine. Monomer-soluble catalysts specified are benzoyl, succinyl, caproyl, diethyl and ditertiary-butyl peroxides, benzyl hyponitrite, a ,a 1-azodiisobutyronitrile, a ,a 1-azobis (a ,g -di-methyl valeronitrile) and dimethyl a ,a 1-azodiisobutyrate. Compounds which may be copolymerized with vinyl chloride include vinyl acetate, propionate and butyrate, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, methyl a -chloroacrylate, maleic acid, fumaric acid, diethyl maleate and diethyl fumarate. The latex resulting from the polymerization may be coagulated, dried, and sieved to remove granular and agglomerated particles. Specification 427,494 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
