Abstract

Granular products are obtained by polymerization of monomeric vinyl compounds in aqueous suspension in presence of finely-divided tricalcium phosphate. The suspension is maintained during polymerization by agitation, e.g. stirring, without the addition of any dispersing or emulsifying agent. Preferably, the ratio of monomer to water is not higher than 1 : 1, a desirable ratio being 1 : 10. The amount of tricalcium phosphate may be as low as 0.1 per cent by weight of the monomer. Specified monomeric vinyl compounds are methyl and ethyl acrylates and methacrylates, styrene, dichlorostyrenes and vinyl acetate. The process is also applicable to the production of copolymers, e.g. of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate.
