Abstract

Photographic material includes a clear layer containing a water-insoluble vinyl pyridine polymer soluble in 1 per cent aqueous acetic acid and an antihalation layer containing a similar polymer. The polymer may be one prepared by polymerizing an a -, b - or g -vinyl-pyridine or a homologue containing an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the pyridine ring, or a copolymer containing up to 20 per cent of another polymerizable vinyl or vinylidene compound having a single vinyl group, e.g. styrene, acrylic esters and amides (e.g. methyl and ethyl acrylates; methyl, ethyl, isobutyl and methoxyethyl methacrylates; and methacrylamide and N - methylacrylamide), acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and vinyl naphthalene. A peroxy catalyst may be used, and polymerization may be effected in solution (preferably containing mineral acid), emulsion, or in bulk. The antihalation layer may contain a pigment such as carbon black, a natural pigment, a metallo-dye complex, or an inorganic coloured compound, or a dye, a number of which are specified. Water- or spirit-soluble dyes may be added from solution, or pigments or dyes may be added in the form of small particles and dispersed or milled into the solution of the polymer.
