Abstract

Monomeric substances, especially those containing the -C=CH2 group, are polymerized in the presence of water without the addition of emulsifying agents, in the presence of per-acids or salts thereof to obtain emulsified products. There are specified: monomers-vinyl esters of organic and inorganic acids, e.g. vinyl formate, acetate, chloracetate, propionate, butyrate, or chloride, or acrylic esters, e.g. methyl and ethyl acrylates; catalysts-persulphuric acid, Caro's acid, the perphosphoric acids or their ammonium, potassium, or sodium salts. Mixtures of monomers may be used; and the polymerization may be carried out in the presence of water-insoluble solvents or swelling agents for the polymers, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene, tetrahydronaphthalene, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, or ethyl acetate, or of softening agents. In examples: (1), (2), (4), (5) there are polymerized in emulsion in aqueous potassium persulphate solution, (1) vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride in the presence of toluene, (2) vinyl isohexylate and vinyl chloride in the presence of ethyl acetate and dibutyl phthalate, (4) vinyl acetate in the presence of methylene chloride and dibutyl phthalate, (5) methyl acrylate in the presence of benzene; (3) vinyl acetate is polymerized in aqueous ammonium persulphate solution in the presence of toluene. The products of the examples may be spread, and dry to clear films. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of per-acid compounds generally.
