Abstract

An aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile is prepared without the use of an emulsifying agent such as a soap or a sulphated or sulphonated organic compound by subjecting to polymerizing conditions a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile in water with the aid of an oxidation-reduction catalyst system, the styrene content being 20 to 90 per cent by weight of the polymerizable monomers. The catalyst system is preferably a mixture of alkali-metal persulphate and bisulphite, preferred proportions being 0.05 to 2 parts persulphate and 0.05 to 5 parts bisulphite per 100 parts of polymerizable monomers.
