Abstract
Stable aqueous dispersions of interpolymers of a major proportion of at least one nonionizable vinyl aromatic compound, e.g. styrene, ar-vinyl toluene or xylene, ar-chloro-or dichlorostyrene and ethyl vinyl benzene, and at least one water-soluble salt of a vinyl aromatic sulphonate are prepared by agitating and heating the monomer mixture containing a water-soluble inorganic salt having an ionization constant greater than 10-5 at 25 DEG C., other than a peroxy compound, a water-soluble inorganic peroxy compound and sufficient water to dissolve the sulphonate, the inorganic salt and the peroxy compound. Suitable sulphonates are sodium, potassium, calcium and barium styrene sulphonates, sodium and potassium ar-vinyl toluene, and ar-vinylxylene and sodium and potassium ar-chlorostyrene sulphonates. The inorganic compound may be sodium or potassium chloride, bromide or sulphate, or calcium or barium chloride or bromide, and may be present as an impurity in the vinyl aromatic sulphonate. The peroxy compound may be hydrogen peroxide or sodium, potassium or ammonium persulphate, to which benzoyl, lauroyl or t-butyl peroxide may be added. Emulsifying agents, e.g. sodium oleate, sulphonated sperm oil and sodium capryl phosphate (Example (4)) may be present. The polymerization is preferably carried out in a closed vessel or under nitrogen to completion or alternatively short of completion when the unpolymerized portion may be vaporized to give a stable, concentrated or dilute aqueous dispersion as required.
