Abstract

1482034 Emulsion polymerization of chloroprene TOYO SODA MANUFACTURING CO Ltd 4 Aug 1975 [6 Aug 1974] 32527/75 Heading C3P A chloroprene polymer latex is produced by polymerizing chloroprene or a mixture thereof with a comonomer, in the presence of at least one anionic or non-ionic emulsifier and a compound of formula in which R is H or C 1-4 alkyl; X is H, C 1-4 alkyl, halogen or -OH; and Y is H, K, Na or a quaternary ammonium group. The compound of the above formula acts as a comonomeric emulsifier, and specified examples thereof are pstyrene sulphonic acid, alpha methyl styrene sulphonic acid, o-chlorostyrene sulphonic acid, o-methyl styrene sulphonic acid and the K, Na, and quaternary ammonium salts thereof. The anionic or non-ionic emulsifier and the unsaturated sulphonic acid are both preferably used in an amount which is 0À1-10 wt. per cent, based on the total monomer weight, including the aromatic sulphonic acid.
