Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of copolymers of a conjugated diolefine and a monolefinic monomer are made by polymerizing an aqueous mixture of the monomers, preferably in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, and introducing into the mixture only after polymerization has commenced but before any coagulation of the polymer dispersion occurs, an emulsifying agent. The emulsifying agent may be added portionwise or continuously during the polymerization and a further portion may be added at the end of the process, which may be different from the original emulsifying agent. The polymerizable mixture may include a chain-terminator, an anti-freeze agent, e.g. methanol, and also "seed" copolymers of the above type. Diolefines mentioned are butadiene-1,3, isoprene, dimethyl butadiene-1,3, and piperylene. The other monomer may be styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, acenaphthylene, vinyl carbazole, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyridine, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, methacrylamide, methacrylic acid, or methyl alpha-chloroacrylate. Specified emulsifying agents are sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium oleyl sulphate, sodium cetyl sulphate, the sodium salt of sulphonated castor oil, the sodium salt of sulphonated or sulphated methyl oleate, sodium oleate, sodium palmitate, sodium stearate, and an oleyl alcohol or dioctyl cresol/ethylene oxide condensate. The catalyst may be hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate, or a redox system consisting of cumene hydroperoxide or benzoyl peroxide mixed with a ferrous sulphate-potassium pyrophosphate complex, and sorbose or fructose. Chain terminators mentioned are alphatic mercaptans, dialkylxanthogen disulphides, di-(benzoic acid ester) tetra-sulphides, tolyldisulphides, and tolyltrisulphide. The copolymer dispersions may be used in water paints, for coating paper and making films; they may also be mixed with natural or other synthetic latices, e.g. in the production of foamed latex sponge.
