Abstract

1,166,810. High solids neoprene latices by direct polymerization. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 20 Sept., 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 44919/68. Heading C3P. High solids neoprene latex is prepared by polymerizing an emulsion of high monomer content wherein there is used as emulsifying composition potassium salts of (a) rosin acid, (b) a formaldehyde condensate of a naphthalene sulphonic acid and (c) a polymerized unsaturated fatty acid, the acids being present in amount 1À3-2.5 parts by weight of (a), 0À25-2 parts by weight of (b) and 0.15 to 0.5 parts by weight of (c), calculated as free acid for (a) and (c) but as salt for (b), with respect to 100 parts by weight of monomer. Component (c) can be a dimerized or trimerized linoleic acid. Part of the potassium ion content can be replaced by sodium ions. The polymerization can take place in presence of modifiers such as mercaptans or iodoform. Copolymers of chloroprene, e.g. with 2,3-dichlorobutadiene can be made.
