Abstract

Vinyl and/or vinylidene chloride are polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a polymerization catalyst and an emulsifier at a gradually decreasing temperature within the range of 100 DEG C. to 30 DEG C. and preferably of 70 DEG C. to 40 DEG C. in order to reduce variations in the rate of reaction during the polymerization. Other ethenoid compounds such as vinyl bromide, cyanide, acetate, propionate, butyrate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, maleic acid and anhydride, esters of maleic, chlormaleic and crotonic acids may be present. Catalysts specified are persulphates, percarbonates, hydrogen-, dibenzoyl, and dicaprylyl peroxides, and as emulsifiers sodium oleate or myristate, potassium palmitate, rosin and dehydrogenated rosin soaps, hymolal sulphates, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium isopropyl naphthalene sulphonate and diethylaminoethyloleylamide hydrochloride and gelatin are specified. In copolymerization the more rapidly polymerizing compound may be added gradually during the reaction. The process may be continuous or by batch, and may be carried out in the presence of stabilisers, plasticizers and resins.
