Abstract

Vinyl or vinylidene chloride, alone, together or with minor amounts of other monomers such as vinyl acetate, propionate or butyrate, or methyl acrylate, methacrylate or ethacrylate, is polymerized in aqueous emulsion, only a part of the emulsifying agent being present initially, the remainder being added continuously or in portions during the polymerization. The monomeric material may be added at the rate at which polymerization occurs, and the latex may be continuously withdrawn. Emulsifiers specified are sodium oleate, potassium palmitate, sodium myristate, rosin, dehydrogenated rosin soaps, hymolal sulphates, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium isopropyl naphthalene sulphate, diethylaminoethyloleylamide hydrochloride, trimethylcetylammonium methyl sulphate, and the hydrochlorides of diethylaminoethoxyanilide of oleic acid and of oleylamidoethyldimethylamine. Potassium persulphate, benzoyl or caprylyl peroxides, sodium perborate and percarbonates, ammonia, sodium bicarbonate or acid phosphate, or lead acetate may be added.
