Abstract

1338924 Ethylene copolymer latexes BORDEN Inc 13 Oct 1971 47595/71 Heading C3P A stable latex of a copolymer of ethylene and comonomers containing vinyl chloride is obtained by maintaining an ethylene pressure on an aqueous composition containing a seed latex, a free radical initiator and an amount of emulsion stabilizer sufficient to maintain mechanical stability but insufficient, usually less than 0À4% of the comonomer charge, to cause foaming on release of pressure and adding a comonomer charge containing a major proportion of vinyl chloride over at least six hours. The seed latex may be of different composition and may provide all the surfactant or protective colloid. In examples the seed is PVC, polyvinyl acetate, poly 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, isopropyl acrylate or ethylene. A persalt or redox initiator is used with sodium lauryl sulphate emulsifier. Comonomers used are vinyl chloride alone or with vinyl acetate.
