Abstract

1407864 Vinyl acetate ethylene/N-methylolacrylamide terpolymers BORDEN Inc 1 Jan 1973 70/73 Heading C3P An adhesive latex is prepared by adding a monomer mixture of vinyl acetate and 0À5% to 2% of N-methylol acrylamide at a controlled rate to an an aqueous emulsion containing 2À5 to 8% of partially hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol and 0À5 to 20À% of an alkali metal or ammonium persulphate or peroxydiphosphate initiator, the percentages being based on the total vinyl acetate used, a pressure of 50 to 300 p.s.i. of ethylene being maintained on the emulsion which is at a temperature of 0-70‹ C. and the monomer addition rate during polymerization being such that the emulsion contains not more than 3À5% of vinyl acetate monomer during formation of at least 75% of the vinyl acetate/ ethylene/N-methylol acrylamide terpolymer. A seed latex of vinyl acetate/ethylene may be prepared in situ in the aqueous emulsion or may be added to the emulsion. In examples the initiator, potassium or ammonium persulphate, was activated by gradual addition of sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate reducing agent. 'In some examples sodium lauryl sulphate was added to the emulsion and in one example sodium vinyl sulphonate was added with the N-methylol acrylamide.
