Abstract

1339182 Ethylene copolymer latexes BORDEN Inc 7 Oct 1971 46714/71 Heading C3P A stable latex of a copolymer of 6-30% ethylene and 94-70% of comonomer(s) including a major proportion of vinyl chloride is obtained by maintaining an ethylene pressure of 500-3000 p.s.i. on an aqueous composition at 50-85‹ C. and containing a seed latex and as initiator a water-soluble persulphate or peroxydiphosphate in the absence of reducing agents while adding the comonomer gradually over at least six hours. In examples the comonomer is vinyl chloride alone or mixed with vinyl acetate. The seed latex may be a different polymer and in examples is PVC, polyvinyl acetate, poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate) or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with ethylene, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, or isopropyl acrylate. Emulsifier and buffer agent may also be present.
