Abstract

(a) Vinylacetate is polymerised in aqueous medium to give an aqueous polyvinylacetate dispersion; (b) an ethylene atmosphere (pressure at least 50 psi) is allowed to act on the dispersion, and vinyl acetate and an acrylamide are polymerised in presence of the dispersion and the ethylene atmosphere, the vinylacetate and the acrylamide being added stepwise as polymerisation proceeds; (c) a colloidal emulsifier and an alkylacrylate are added to the polymer dispersion prepared as per (b) above, and the alkylacrylate is polymerised in presence of the polymer dispersion. Used for water-based paints.
