Abstract

1,191,649. Vinyl acetate polymer emulsions. CELANESE CORP. 29 Sept., 1967 [5 Oct., 1966], No. 44392/67. Heading C3P. A polymer emulsion is produced by polymerizing vinyl acetate alone or together with one or more other ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid esters in an aqueous medium comprising the monomers, an emulsifying agent and a free radical polymerization catalyst in a polymerization zone, the total amount of catalyst used being the minimum amount to effect complete polymerization of all the monomer used and the emulsifying agent present in the zone before polymerization commences is from 15 to 50% of the total used in the process, the remainder being added to the zone after an emulsion is formed by polymerization of at least 50% and less than 95% of the total monomer to be used. The polymer may be derived from vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate and di-2-ethylhexyl maleate. In examples the monomers were polymerized in an aq. mixture of a nonylphenoxy-poly-(ethyleneoxy)-ethanol, hydroxyethyl-cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium persulphate.
